Ask an Oral Surgeon: Are Dental Implants the Best Option for You?

Missing teeth is one of the major dental problems of adults living in the U.S., with West Virginia having the highest rate of natural teeth loss at 42.8 percent. Livingston, along with the rest of New Jersey, sits comfortably at the 40th spot with 16.9 percent but it doesn’t mean that the state is any better off. Teeth loss is a serious problem that needs to be addressed to prevent worse issues, like jawbone deterioration and altered facial structure. Fortunately, dental implants can end all those worries. Generally, an oral surgeon can tell you if dental implant is the best option for you, but these guidelines can also come in handy.

A Livingston Oral Surgeon can Relieve Pain from Impacted Wisdom Tooth

If left undiagnosed, impacted wisdom teeth could become vulnerable to tooth decay and gum diseases. Moreover, impacted wisdom teeth can also cause damage or infection to nearby teeth, particularly on the second molars, once it pushes against them. Moreover, a fully impacted wisdom tooth, or one that didn’t grow out of the gums, develops in a sac within the jawbone, which can then be filled with fluid and form a cyst that consequently damages the jawbone, teeth, and nearby nerves. These are just among the many serious oral health complications that could happen to you if you chose to ignore an impacted wisdom tooth. If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms and fear that an impacted wisdom tooth is to blame, don’t hesitate to approach an oral surgeon in West Orange and in nearby areas around Livingston, like those from Orosurgery, LLC - Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Tips from a Livingston Oral Surgeon for Preserving Dental Implants

Dental implants are amazing because they can replace teeth that have fallen off with crowns that could be used like real teeth. Some people, however, are not taking care of their dental implants properly. A Livingston oral surgeon wishes to remind people that since dental implants are made to replace real teeth, they should also be given the same treatment that we give to real teeth. Dental implants may be artificial but they are just as vulnerable to bacteria as your real teeth. In fact, there is a bacterial infection called peri-implantitis which causes inflammation of the gums and may even result in bone loss. When this happens, the bone that supports the implant may waste away and the implant itself would fall off.

Oral Surgeon in Livingston, NJ Joins Volunteers on Medical Mission to Peru

Orosurgery’s Dr. Gerald Geldzahler, a renowned maxillofacial and oral surgeon in Livingston, will return to Peru on April 24, 2015 to join a group of dedicated nurses, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, and other surgeons for a second medical mission sponsored by Healing the Children, Northeast. The mission will focus on the surgical correction of cleft lip and palates for underprivileged children. In the previous year’s mission, Dr. Geldzahler recalls the strong emotions of the first day, which was set aside for patient screening. “Seeing all those children with facial deformities in one room is overwhelming. You just have to choke back the tears and proceed,” said Dr. Geldzahler. In that mission, the group performed 64 surgeries over a period of four and a half days. Mission volunteers shouldered their own travel expenses, while carrying 2 bags of instruments and supplies each, and only bringing the mere necessities of personal items.

What a Livingston Oral Surgeon Would Say about You Getting Implants

Generally, anyone with health gums can be a candidate for dental implant installation. Then again, since a strong and sufficient jawbone is required, children do not often qualify. Their jawbones are still developing and may sustain significant damage if prepared for implantation. Also, an oral surgeon in Livingston will have to ask any candidate to commit to a healthy oral hygiene. This is to prevent infection caused by bacteria buildup. Dental implant installation is often not covered by dental insurance simply because it is considered a major procedure. Fortunately, some dental and medical plans are starting to cover this procedure or a part of it depending on factors like cause of tooth loss. Should you need the procedure as a treatment for certain oral conditions, you can opt to discuss insurance coverage with your dentist.

With Help from a Livingston Oral Surgeon, Cleft Palates Can Be Fixed

Every parent wants a perfect smile for their child–but sometimes the nature has other plans. A condition called “cleft palate” happens when some parts of the mouth and lips don’t join properly during early pregnancy. It involves a hole in the roof of the mouth and can range from an opening behind the soft palate to almost complete separation of the hard and soft palate. If it occurs in the upper lip, it is identified as a “cleft lip”. Those born with the condition are familiar with the difficulties that come from living with a cleft lip or palate. For one, eating and getting enough nutrition can be a challenge because food and liquids may go up the nose. Another concern is the risk for ear and sinus problems due to fluids reaching places they shouldn’t. Moreover, the condition makes it hard to speak clearly and can also impede proper teeth development.
