With Help from a Livingston Oral Surgeon, Cleft Palates Can Be Fixed

Every parent wants a perfect smile for their child–but sometimes the nature has other plans. A condition called “cleft palate” happens when some parts of the mouth and lips don’t join properly during early pregnancy. It involves a hole in the roof of the mouth and can range from an opening behind the soft palate to almost complete separation of the hard and soft palate. If it occurs in the upper lip, it is identified as a “cleft lip”. Those born with the condition are familiar with the difficulties that come from living with a cleft lip or palate. For one, eating and getting enough nutrition can be a challenge because food and liquids may go up the nose. Another concern is the risk for ear and sinus problems due to fluids reaching places they shouldn’t. Moreover, the condition makes it hard to speak clearly and can also impede proper teeth development.
